Manu Kokiri @ Otiria
Nga Puhi Roll Out Red Carpet for A Double Celebration

Saturday 10th September was a very special day for Otiria Marae in Moerewa as they hosted over 300 people in a double celebration of commission two of their youth into ministry and welcoming the Bishop of Aotearoa to Te Tai Tokerau Hui Amorangi.

Kersna Cherrington and Tapu Laulu were commissioned and licensed by Bishop Brown as Manu Kokiri (Youth Enablers) in Te Tai Tokerau.

The day was very special for Kersna as she followed a long tradition of her whanau called to ministry at Otiria Marae. Kersna’s grandparents were both priests from Otiria, and Kersna said she could feel their presence throughout the karakia. Kersna’s father is the Archdeacon of Te Tai Tokerau.

Tapu was supported by 20 of his ainga (whanau) who travelled from Tamaki to tautoko him on his big day. Tapu’s 90 year old Grandmother was there to see him enter ministry, as well as his mother the Reverend Va Laulu, a priest in Manukau.

In their roles as Manu Kokiri, Tapu and Kersna aim to plant and nurture the seeds of an effective ministry to youth. In particular they will focus on identifying and nurturing young people called to ministry through the Manu Karakia programme.

Also a powhiri saw Ngapuhi roll out the red carpet to welcome Bishop Brown as the 5th Bishop of Aotearoa.

One of the kuia present had come especially to see Bishop Brown. She was present at the opening of St Marys Church in Tikitiki in 1926. She now lives in Whangarei and is aged 96.

Bishop of Te Tai Tokerau Te Kitohi Pikaahu presented some of the Kuia and kaumatua with the Te Pihopatanga o Aotearoa OMS (Order of Meritorious Service), including Bishop Ben Te Haara. He then presented two rangatahi with plaques to commemorate the occasion, telling them to always remember the day and to tell future generations about the day they were there to welcome the Bishop of Aotearoa to Te Tai Tokerau.

As it states, this is the official home of the Anglican Church worldwide. A reasonable news service, but overall boring and targeted at a very specific slice of Anglicans worldwide.
