Rangatahi presence strong at Hui Amorangi
Te Manawa o te
Wheke kicked off the first of the Hui Amorangi gatherings for 2005 from
the 18-20 March. It was hosted by the two rohe of the Rotorua district,
Te Ngae and St Faiths at Te Ao Marama Hall in Ohinemutu, Rotorua.
As usual, there was a strong presence of rangatahi from each of the 4
Amorangi archdeaconries who attended the Hui Amorangi.
The highlight for rangatahi at the hui was the election of Kahu Miller
(18) of Ngaruawahia, as a representative to next year's General Synod /
Te Hinota Whanui. Kahu who leads Kura Ratapu at her local church in
Taupiri, will be one of the youngest ever representatives to General
Synod.
The rangatahi held a caucus during the hui where new plans were laid
including an Amorangi rangatahi hui to be held at Taapapa in Rotorua,
tentatively scheduled for 15-16 April. This hui will reignite the
Amorangi youth council, which was proposed at the previous Hui Amorangi.
Amorangi kaihautū Reverend Arthur Hokianga, requested the rangatahi to
bring their visions for rangatahi in the Amorangi. Rangatahi and those
interested in working with rangatahi, as well kuia, kaumatua, and pakeke
are welcome to attend the hui.
The rangatahi led the karakia ahiahi on the Saturday night, including
some beautiful singing and a strong message from Arthur.
RUIA: Connect,
Grow and Learn
Whether in rural
or urban settings, many of the rangatahi leaders in Te Pihopatanga o
Aotearoa suffer from isolation. It is common to find a rangatahi leader
who is called to serve and minister yet who is discouraged from a lack
of fellowship and peer support.
Maori tikanga and experience is that the most effective form of ministry
and communication is kanohi ki te kanohi, or face to face. Te Māra
Rangatahi Ministry School’s experiences working with rangatahi leaders
also taught us the huge importance of communication after hui, to follow
up on needs and callings. However due to resource constraints, Te Māra
is only able to visit rohe occasionally so frequent visits were not the
answer.
To meet this challenge Te Māra set out to establish a communications
solution that could meet our networking and ministry needs and yet be
practical and accessible. Since its beginning in 2000, Te Māra has
understood the need for the Church to effectively utilise information
and communication technologies (ICT) as a vital ministry tool.
After many months of development, testing and production Te Māra has
launched RUIA, the online rangatahi community of Te Pihopatanga o
Aotearoa. RUIA meets the connectivity needs of the rangatahi leaders
throughout Aotearoa, and adds value to their interactions through the
addition of resources and support.
In coming issues Te Kupu will explore further, the development and
future of RUIA.
Te Kupu, the rangatahi news of Te Pihopatanga o Aotearoa is only a part
of the exciting developments at RUIA.
