Day of Joy for New Priest, Archdeacon

On a cold and wet yet joyful winter’s day, Hirini Kaa was ordained a Priest at St Mary’s Church in Tikitiki.
Saturday 25th June saw Hirini followed his father and grandfather in being ordained into the priesthood. Hirini is the tenth priest in three generations of his whanau.
A busload of the whanau from Te Hui Amorangi o Te Tai Tokerau came from as far as Kaitaia to support their youngest Priest. The bus had its own excitement, including getting stuck in the dark and rain in Rangitukia and being sideswiped by a hit and run driver in Auckland.
Pihopa Te Kitohi Pikaahu led the ordination service alongside Te Pihopa o Aotearoa, Bishop Brown Turei. Bishop John Gray of Te Wai Pounamu celebrated and Bishop John Bluck, the Bishop of Waiapu, preached.
Hirini was also collated in the service as the Archdeacon of Kahui Rangatahi, Aotearoa, by Pihopa Brown.
An Archdeacon’s ministry is an extension of the ministry of Te Pihopa, and Hirini is accountable directly to Te Pihopa for his actions and undertakings.
The role of the Archdeacon of Kahui Rangatahi, Aotearoa is to support, advocate and encourage the ministry and voice of Rangatahi in Te Pihopatanga o Aotearoa.
Hirini sees the two biggest tasks of his new role as “praying for rangatahi ministry across the Church, and leading the development of the new Manu Karakia rangatahi ministry order.”
Hirini will be Archdeacon for the next three years.
