Tai Rawhiti Rangatahi Represent!
A new Pihopa o
Aotearoa, Representatives to General Synod / Te Hinota Whanui and the
Anglican Consultative Council and an exciting community development
initiative were the rangatahi highlights from the Tai Rawhiti Hui
Amorangi 2005. The hui was held from 1-3 April at Whakato Marae,
Manutuke.
Acknowledgement was given at the hui to Pihopa Brown Turei, who was
recently elected Pihopa o Aotearoa. Pihopa Brown has acknowledged
rangatahi as one of his main priorities for his episcopacy, including
the recruitment and support of young minita.
Michael Tamihere (23), a Tai Rawhiti student at Te Rau Kahikatea, has
recently been named as one of only two world-wide youth representatives
to the Anglican Consultative Council that meets in Nottingham, England
in June. Michael is also attending the Anglican Indigenous Network hui
in California from 8-16 April with Pihopa Brown and other Pihopatanga
delegates.
Tai Rawhiti continued the commitment of the other Amorangi to elect
rangatahi to General Synod / Te Hinota Whanui by electing Tessa Wolff
(25) as one of the representatives to go to Christchurch next year.
Reverend Brent Swann led a presentation on Te Aka Ora, a community group
that provides social services in Turanga. Te Aka Ora currently has 23
staff and provide programmes ranging from young mothers counselling,
support and education through to music programmes. It is an exciting
time for those involved as they continue to grow and bear fruit for
their people.
Overall the Hui was an enjoyable experience for all who attended, and
the hui concluded with a lovely service at the Manutuke Church led by
Pihopa Brown.
Bishop K Calls
for Action on rangatahi ministry
Bishop Te Kitohi
Pikaahu called for action on rangatahi ministry at the Te Tai Tokerau
Hui Amorangi held at Hoani Waititi Marae from 1-3 April 2005.
The highlight of the hui was the prominent place given to rangatahi.
Bishop Te Kitohi dedicated a large and prominent part of his opening
address to the importance of rangatahi in the Church, stating “the
ministry to rangatahi must always be a priority in our church. It has to
be high on our agenda at every forum in all our ministry units in Te Tai
Tokerau… I urge you that as a Hui Amorangi we must not only be seen to
be encouraging rangatahi we must be known by DOING IT, nothing less.”
In an inspired move the rangatahi also asked to be able to host the Hui
Amorangi in 2006 as part of the celebration for the upcoming Church-wide
“Year of Youth”. This was fully supported by the Hui.
Kersna Cherrington has also been chosen as the rangatahi representative
to General Synod / Te Hinota Whanui. Kersna, from Whangarei, attended
Hinota Whanui in 2004 as a rangatahi observer, and is looking forward to
going to Christchurch as a full representative.
Another hui highlight was the Saturday night karakia led by the rangatahi.
The kauwhau was delivered in the form of a rap by Paula Wallace, aka Lady
C from Manukau Takiwā. Her efforts were followed up by the Bishop who
freestyled on evangelism, including a shout out to all the pastorates.
The Bishop even claimed a new title in his rapping debut – Bishop K. As
the Pihopa says “Check it out!”
The hui concluded on Sunday morning with a large karakia at Holy
Sepulchre Church on Khyber Pass Road that included three ordinations to
the diaconate and the installation of Canon Dr Hone Kaa as Archdeacon of
Tamaki Makaurau.
