Out Into the Harvest
Te Māra Rangatahi Ministry School Nurturing Manu Karakia in
Challenging 2006 Programme

Manu Karakia
are rangatahi aged 16-40 responding to God’s call to ministry within Te
Pihopatanga o Aotearoa. The Te Māra Rangatahi Ministry School team are focused
on the challenge of building this programme in 2006.
Ven. Hirini
Kaa, the Archdeacon of Kahui Rangatahi, is responsible for the overall
development of the programme. “The harvest is great, and the labourers are few.
Rangatahi ministry is the greatest challenge facing Te Pihopatanga o Aotearoa.
Our target is to have 100 Manu Karakia licensed and commissioned by the end of
the year. However even half that number labouring in the harvest would have a
huge impact on our Church and Maori communities.”
The Manu
Kokiri (Youth Enablers) continue to play a vital role identifying and nurturing
Manu Karakia. Don Tamihere in Te Tai Rawhiti; Kersna Cherrington and Tapu Laulu
in Te Tai Tokerau; and Raymond Hina and Terry Timutimu in Te Wai Pounamu will be
joined later this year by Manu Kokiri in Te Upoko o Te Ika and Te Manawa o Te
Wheke.
Te Māra aim to
bring forward Manu Karakia for commissioning in Te Tai Rawhiti by March, and has
begun identifying more Manu Karakia candidates in Te Tai Tokerau and Te Wai
Pounamu for commissioning in September.
The year ahead
holds many hui across Aotearoa to build this ministry, from regular renewal
retreats to help refresh the Manu Karakia in their ministry through to Core
Ministry Skill training wananga. There are six Core Ministry Skills to enhance
Manu Karakia ministry: Spiritual Formation and Discipleship; Evangelism and
Mission; Karakia; Mihinaretanga; Safe Practise; and Tikanga.
The Te Māra
team are all also heavily involved in local and Hui Amorangi ministry,
supporting local and regional rangatahi ministry initiatives. All of this
combines into a serious workload for the Te Māra team in 2006, but it is a
challenge they relish.
Over the next
few issues Te Kupu will profile some of the Manu Karakia and the ministry
they are undertaking. Or visit the Te Māra website www.rangatahi.org.nz

Youth Yeah! Resources
TORU: Anglican Centre for Youth Ministry Studies have developed an awesome
resource for use in your Whare Karakia on Sundays. These prayers are based on
the readings for Sunday, and have been written by youth groups from across the
whole Church. You can find these free resources by visiting the Youth Yeah! site
at www.youthyeah.com/resource.htm

One of the
exciting workshops held at the Tikanga Youth Exchange 06 was a Creative Workshop
that brought together talented young people from across our church. They
combined their skills into a selection of songs that have been recorded and are
now available on the TORU: Anglican Centre For Youth Ministry website at

Led by Unite the union for workers from McDonalds, BurgerKing, Starbucks,
Pizzahut and KFC, this website gathers support for a fair $12 minimum wage, the
end to youth rates, secure hours and other minimum entitlements. With good
information, this site is empowering for rangatahi in paid employment.
